TRY SOMETHING NEW It’s incredibly important for your psych and development as a route setter to push yourself and go past your comfort zone. This can be done in many ways, but one of the most useful is to develop a move that you’re already familiar with. In this case we wanted to push the concept of the re-direct paddle, by extending the sequence as much as possible. After a ton of experimentation and some ideal material (thanks @avavolumes and @olio_climbing for the perfect holds and volumes) we got to a version we were happy with. Although Instagram is full of flashy jumps and crazy co-ordination, the majority of our route setting focusses on a more classic style. Bad holds, poor feet and powerful moves, trying to create some of the magic that you find on the 5* lines in the best climbing areas of the world. These @motifclimbinggrips Thunderdomes were the perfect tool for this style. Tons of variety, subtle slopers and super usable alongside some @avavolumes to change up the angles. How many co-ordination moves can we set WITHOUT moving the start holds? This is a snippet taken from our dynamic movement workshop that we run as a part of our Advanced Route Setting courses, with the next one running at @flashpointbristol on December 12th. In this workshop we take a deep dive into STABLE and UNSTABLE positions and how we can use these to control the movement of the climber and force both dynamic and coordinated movement. Setting with limited material, TOP TIPS. 1) UTILISE THE FEATURES YOU HAVE. From wall arêtes and grooves to volumes from other boulders, the key here is to really squeeze every bit of interest out of the features that are already on the wall. 2) NEW PERSPECTIVE. Especially if setting at the same wall with the same holds, try to take a step back and use the holds in a new way for you. For this boulder, @geometricsetting took the classic Axis egg (a hold we’ve used hundreds of times) and used it in a different way, palming and smearing on the poor back side of the holds. Remember, if it’s new and interesting for you, it will be for the climbers too. 3) USE NEGATIVE SPACE. Although some modern climbing walls are absolutely packed with macros and shiny volumes, there’s value to be found in negative space, both for movement and aesthetics. Challenge yourself to make a sequence work without encroaching on the empty space and leave that blank, impossible feel that can be so awe inspiring on some of the best climbs in the world.
